Club History

The Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club was formed in 1978 with initial funds from the community in the form of a $1 donation. Construction began in October 1984 with the development of 3 holes which remain today. The original holes were maintained by volunteers with mowing fairways and greens undertaken with Victa push lawnmowers. Golfers played these holes three times for their 9- hole competition. The original Clubhouse, which was also the greens shed, was constructed from an old shipping container.

In April 1997 the Course expanded to 9 holes and from this point the Club began to grow quickly. In February 2006 the Course opened another 6 holes to make 15 holes (there was not enough money to complete the 18 holes) and play continued this way for many years. During this time environmental studies and land right issues prevented the club from completing the 18 holes. After substantial expenditure was outlaid and all environmental impact statements were finalised approval was granted to complete the course in August 2011 with works beginning almost immediately and the 18 holes were officially opened on May 25th 2012.

In the history of the Club, much of the work has been completed by volunteers and this culture remains to this day. Community members have been wonderful by donating time and quite often machinery and expertise free of charge to develop the course to what it is today. Over the years it has been common to see tradesmen completing major tasks such as clubhouse extensions usually with a band of merry helpers acting as labourers.

With the expansion to 18 holes, a dedicated professional Pro Shop and the Course continuing to be maintained in fantastic condition the Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club is now rated #138 golf course in Australia. What a wonderful achievement!

Over the years much has been documented about the Club’s history. Read more in the History from 1978 – 2014 or in the Golf Book which takes us up to 2019 and is still a work in progress or watch the video below.
